ISO Standards: Concept and Applications

1. What is ISO

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is an international standardization organization established on February 23, 1947. It is the body responsible for establishing international standards, providing commercial and industrial standards applied worldwide.

Currently, there are more than 160 countries that are members of ISO. The main headquarters of ISO is located in Geneva, Switzerland. Vietnam is the 77th country to join the ISO standardization system. ISO standards are translated into Vietnamese and published under the name Vietnam Standards (abbreviated as TCVN).

With its main mission to promote the development of standardization to facilitate international exchange of goods and services, ISO standards are applied widely. Recognizing the benefits and effectiveness of ISO implementation, its scope has expanded to encompass all organizations, regardless of type, scale, and product, including in the field of administrative management and professions.

To date, ISO has issued approximately 20,000 quality standards covering everything from manufactured products, technology, and services to agriculture, the environment, and food. ISO standards are applied globally, covering both commercial and industrial standards.

2. What is ISO standard

ISO standards are internationally standardized rules designed to help organizations operate sustainably, creating capabilities to enhance the value of organizational businesses in all areas of manufacturing, commerce, and services. When ISO standards are applied, the quality of the products meets the quality requirements of users.

In summary:

ISO standards are considered a global benchmark that businesses need to meet if they want to achieve ISO certification.

Depending on the industry or field, there are specific ISO standards. When implemented in a business or organization, ISO standards cover all production processes as well as organizational aspects.

For the exchange of goods, services, and trade both domestically and internationally, ISO, with its globally standardized standards, facilitates this process. Additionally, when businesses apply ISO standards, the value of the business within the international community increases. Therefore, the main task of ISO is to promote and improve businesses, creating opportunities for expansion.

ISO provides general standards for industrial and commercial management globally. Currently, there are numerous ISO standards, with the seven most popular sets of standards.
