Lithium-ion Battery Testing: Principle, method, technical standard

Testing Lithium-ion batteries is one of the crucial steps in determining the features, capacity, and safety of batteries during use. Lithium-ion batteries undergo mandatory or optional testing standards for each market before they are allowed for sale.

1. Principles of Li-ion Battery Testing

Battery testing involves simulating environmental conditions (hot, cold, humid, salt fog, etc.) to recreate unsafe conditions for the battery (impact, drop, overcharging, overheating, etc.) under controlled circumstances to assess battery performance.

The environmental simulation system and unsafe conditions for the battery will be constructed according to national and international technical standards, using specialized and highly reliable testing equipment.

2. Methods of Li-ion Battery Testing

2.1. Safety testing

This is a test to ensure the safety of the battery during transportation and usage. The test will simulate unfavorable situations, potential risks that may occur in real-life scenarios.

Some safety testing includes:

  • - External short circuit protection

  • - Overcharge protection test

  • - Over-discharge protection test

  • - Drop Test

  • - Crush Test

  • - Overcharge protection test

  • - Fire resistance test

2.2. Performance testing

This is a test to ensure that the battery operates according to its original design. The test will reveal whether the battery performs well in real-world conditions.

Some performance testing includes:

  • - Discharge capacity at room temperature

  • - Standard charging

  • - Standard Discharge

  • - Super Fast Charge

  • - Cycle life endurance test

  • - Temperature step test

2.3. Durability and environment testing

This is a test to assess the durability of the battery over time and under various operating conditions. The tests will provide insights into the lifespan of the battery under different operating conditions.

Some durability and environment testing includes:

  • - Thermal Cycling

  • - Temperature shock

  • - Salt spray test

  • - Soaking test

  • - Pack/module mechanical shock

  • - Tightness test

  • - IPX7/ IPX9K/ IP6KX

  • - Rotation test
